JPNDC's Community Organizing Team (CO) operates across all departments to fulfill this mission. CO leads our teams for local, state and national advocacy campaigns, being active participants in initiatives on the ground, in our housing, and in coalitions across MA to ensure JPNDC is an impactful resident and client power broker.

The Role

This is a highly responsible position that reports to the VP of Impact and Empowerment. The Director of Community Organizing is responsible for overseeing organizing actions aligned with this strategic mission to win significant community improvements and foster communications to build the power of JPNDC constituents. The Director and their team will focus on contributing to greater economic mobility and racial equity through advocacy, planning, leadership development, community celebration, and targeted initiatives designed to secure and support affordable housing. The Community Organizing Director will work cross-departmentally to maximize synergy to ensure an integrated organizing approach. This position will supervise community organizers, volunteers and interns. The Community Organizing Director will work with the Organizing Committee and key Coalition Partners as our JPNDC liaison supporting the VP of Impact and Empowerment.

Duties

  • Supervise community organizing staff, interns and volunteers to support their growth and professional development.
  • Develop and oversee implementation of community organizing and outreach plans that align across the mission to support positive impacts and outcomes.
  • Work with staff and residents to surface community issues of concern that lend themselves to collective action and resolution.
  • Amplify advocacy opportunities/legislative priorities in alignment with resident interests and the vision, mission, and core values of JPNDC.
  • Galvanize community support to launch and win campaigns to secure permitting for prospective affordable housing pipeline opportunities across multiple MA geographies.
  • Support VP of Impact and Empowerment to build and maintain relationships with elected officials, public agencies at the local, state and national levels, as well as within our stakeholder networks.
  • Work with VP of Impact and Empowerment to develop plans that maximize fundraising and communication strategies informed by organizing activities, including expanding media and public relations to broaden awareness and access to JPNDC services.
  • Lead the Impact and Empowerment team to coordinate and host annual initiatives such as Legislative Breakfasts, MACDC Lobby Day, and community building activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Required:
    • Demonstrated track-record of success in leadership development, internal and external relationship management, and implementing large scale/multi-partner organizing campaigns with a focus on community empowerment and affordable housing development.
    • 3-5 years of progressively responsible management experience including proven experience leading a team of professionals through successful metrics.
    • Extensive knowledge of community development, zoning, and economic mobility services in Boston and across MA.
    • Passion for local and national social and political issues with a focus on reducing structural barriers.
    • Self-motivated and resourceful.
    • Excellent verbal/written skills and organizational abilities.
    • Demonstrated success in facilitation across complex issues.
    • Proven ability to work with people of various ethnic, economic and educational backgrounds.
    • Willingness to undertake a demanding and flexible work schedule, including attending night and weekend activities.

  • Preferred:
    • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Sustainable Community Development, Planning, Sociology or related field.
    • Experience in Business Development, Organizational Leadership and/or Economics.
    • Bilingual proficiency in Haitian Creole and/or Spanish is strongly preferred to effectively engage with the communities we serve. Multilingual candidates of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Work Environment: This is an onsite role with a flexible schedule, including scheduled nights and weekends, and travel throughout Massachusetts

Employment Terms/Compensation: This is a full-time, salaried position with a generous benefit package. Salary range: $95,000 - $105,000 commensurate with experience.
