Manager, Strategic Finance and FP&A

Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the most creative and interesting people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform. The terms of our culture shouldn’t be set by legacy media gatekeepers or chaos-fueling social platforms, but by the people who actively shape it. Substack’s model—based on direct subscriptions—has fueled an explosion of independent publishing. It empowers creators with economic autonomy, creative ownership, and a direct connection to their most engaged audiences.

We are seeking a Manager, Strategic Finance and FP&A to join our growing team. In this high-impact role, you will report directly to the Head of Finance and serve as a key partner in leading both the Strategic Finance and Financial Planning & Analysis functions. You will be responsible for delivering insights that drive data-informed decision-making, optimizing financial processes, and supporting the company’s long-term strategic initiatives.

Substack is experiencing rapid growth, and this role is critical to ensuring we scale efficiently, allocate resources effectively, and maintain financial discipline in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams and senior leadership to align financial plans with business goals, helping to shape the future of Substack through thoughtful analysis and strategic guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead financial planning processes, including monthly, quarterly, and annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning across the P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow
  • Build and manage robust financial models to support strategic decision-making across business initiatives, new product launches, and growth opportunities
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with teams across the company to gather, analyze, and synthesize financial and operational data; translate insights into clear recommendations for leadership
  • Develop and evolve strategic analyses, such as pricing strategy, sales efficiency and cost drivers, and total addressable market (TAM) sizing
  • Track and report on key financial metrics, surfacing areas of opportunity or concern, and delivering data-driven insights to help optimize performance
  • Support long-term strategic planning, including evaluation of investments, partnerships, and M&A opportunities
  • Identify and implement process improvements to streamline FP&A operations and enhance forecasting accuracy and speed
  • Communicate financial insights clearly and concisely, tailoring presentations and analyses for non-financial audiences across the company
  • Craft and deliver high-impact presentations for senior leadership, board members, investors, and external stakeholders
  • Lead financial diligence and modeling for potential fundraising, M&A, and capital allocation decisions, acting as a strategic thought partner to executive leadership

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 6+ years of combined experience in investment banking, private equity, management consulting, strategic finance, or FP&A
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a related discipline
  • Proven excellence in project management, with the ability to work with large data sets, evaluate and improve existing processes, and identify opportunities for operational efficiency
  • Strong analytical, financial modeling, and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities, with a talent for simplifying complex topics into clear, actionable insights
  • Adept at building cross-functional relationships and influencing stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ownership mindset and intellectual curiosity, paired with a results-driven attitude
  • Ability to make well-informed recommendations that support execution and strategic decision-making; recognized as a trusted and objective advisor
  • Proficiency with G Suite and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Bonus: Experience with Aleph, SQL, Snowflake, Python, or VBA

Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $155,000 to $175,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.
